Course Objective

The aims of this course are; to give intro-information on design in footwear and leather craft product group; explain the basic knowledge for preparing an image sheet with the balance among colour, fabric and form; improve the ability of three dimensional drawing of main and auxiliary materials (last, sole, upper etc) used in shoe-making and basic bag forms, practice by ateliers in order to improve the creativity of students.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Express their creative and original ideas by designs and three dimensional sample forms
2   Draw the sole and last, the main materials in shoe design, in three dimension.
3   Draw the main bag forms in three dimension
4   Learn the basic information on footwear and leather craft product design process
5   Defend his / her designs and presentations, have the ability of expressing his / her ideas literally or visually in front of the evaluation jury within the scope of Footwear and Leather craft Product Design I.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Explaining the topic title that will be taught in spring term; Explaining the intro-design knowledge on footwear and leather craft production and the basic principles and rules
2 Analysis of textual variety of basic materials used in footwear and leather craft production and studying through the sketch period
3 Evaluation of sketch studies
4 Explaining the design process knowledge on footwear and leather craft: explaining the knowledge for preparing image sheet. Preparing the sample sheet about the selected topic.
5 Performing a practice for the use of image sheet (colour, textile and material)
6 Introduction of shoe sole; performing three dimensional drawing by the assigned sketches to the students
7 1. Jury mid-term evaluation
8 Introduction of shoe sole; performing three dimensional drawing on sole; improving the drawing
9 Performing atelier studies in order to practice shoe sole and last knowledge. The target product: `handmade sandals
10 Completing the `handmade sandals atelier study
11 Explaining the basic information for bag design; performing three dimensional form practices on bag, evaluation.
12 Performing atelier studies in order to improve three dimension and balance in bag. Target product: ` handmade unlined bag
13 Completing the `handmade unlined bag atelier study
14 2. Jury evaluation

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

In this course; The lecturer of the lesson explains the basic information on design process for Footwear and Leather Craft Product, shows the form and textural variety of main materials by using samples or visuals, performs sample studies on expressing these materials in design. At the second stage, three dimensional drawing studies and then sketch studies over a specified topic are performed. Constructive comments on sketches and theoretical knowledge are studied. Details such as the function, form and area of use of accessories before design are discussed. At the third and the last stage, students perform handmade sandals and handmade unlined bag .

Course Policies and Rules

1.There is an 80 % obligation in attendance to lesson.
2. All plagiarism attempts and actions would end up in disciplinary punishment
3. If one doesn t hand over the required sketch- design studies on time, the evaluation would be carried out by taking this into consideration. But the student is supposed to hand over required things.
4. For late project deliveries, decreasing a letter grade for each day will be applied.
