Course Objective

The aim of this course is to teach the factors in emergence of scripts in art of calligraphy, its interaction with similar and different disciplines; variety of scripts, their functions between disciplines and the stages in script design.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To define the factors for the emergence of the art of calligraphy and its sources; to sort the bibliography
2   To state the interaction of Turkish art of calligraphy with similar and different disciplines, that process and its results
3   To define types and functions of scripts in Turkish art of calligraphy regarding their area of usage
4   To explain and apply the process of design regarding script types in Turkish art of calligraphy.
5   To prepare a verbal seminar and presentation of an example of unique script design in the area that they are acquired knowwledge and skill.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

In this course, about pattern islamic calligraphies, related resources, collected editions and terminology of related subject will be introduced. The techniques of pattern writings in Turkish Islamic calligraphie will be shown schematically and step by step. Unique pattern writings stages and completed parts will be shown on a project chosen as an example.

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

The course has 2 credits for theoretical knowledge and 2 credits for applications. There will be both midterm and final exam to evaluate students. In the exams, the degree of comprehension and understanding of the subjects in given course books and also the degree of skills in applications will be evaluated. A homework and a presentation which are prepared with the systematic of the comprehended course will be expected from students.

Assessment Criteria

In order to number of questions in the exams, the mark distributions out of 100 points will be announced before the exams and the total result will be evaluated. The project, homework presentation and attendance will be evaluated out of 100 points.

Course Policies and Rules

Students who come to class late are evaluated as attended the half of the class. All of the attendances are evaluated in order to percentages given above. At the end of the classes, the subject of next class is announced to students as study-research subject. The course begin with the discussion of study- research results before presentation of the subject.
