Course Objective

The aim of this course is to have the students comprehend the basic principles of the mosaic technique which was one of the basic techniques used in Seljuk and early Ottoman periods in tile art and to teach them practically.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   be informed of the art and the techniques of tile art during Seljuk and early Ottoman,
2   be informed of the technical details of mosaic technique,
3   make researches and tryouts about colour and glazing formations of the composition they are going to make in their applications,
4   apply the colour and glazing used in mosaic technique in their own projects,
5   apply their projects and make them ready for presentation by using the researches and drawings.

3 Introduction of mosaic technique, one of the techniques used for making tiles in Seljuk period
4 Introduction of technical, esthetical and motif details of Tile Mosaics
5 The construction phase of Tile Mosaic
6 The kinds of mud and the methods for plate shaping
7 Design transfer
8 Cutting the motifs and separating the pieces
9 Numbering the separated pieces
10 Tapering the dry pieces and retouching them

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

1- Lessons
In this course, the techniques used to shape raw materials in tile and ceramics will be introduced.
Also, the methods used in these techniques will be examined and then the possible projects of this subject will be emphasized.
2- Revision
Design works will be changed into projects by scanning resources and assignments. Projects will be supported by in-class studies, assignments and homeworks, and the students will be encouraged for solving the problems.
3- Applications
By using decoration studies (lining, mud, cutting, making holes) and the lining removing methods, project and presentation studies will be done about these subjects. And the students will be instructed about glazing and baking.

1- 80 % attendance is compulsory.
2- Every plagiarism attempt and act will be considered as a disciplinary action.
3- It will not be considered as an excuse if assignments and projects are submitted late because of not attending the lesson.
4- When submitted late, the project will be evaluated one less letter grade for each day.
