Course Objective

It is to develop integrative, creative and innovative approaches by using traditional paint, printing and finishing processes on different surfaces varying from denim to velvet fabrics with the newly developed techniques and methods. It is to produce original designs by incorporating the experiences gained in the application into the theoretical background obtained with the research. This course is going to enable the students to create value by making an integrative interpretation for the artistic textile works done with the traditional material and techniques with the help of new technique and material.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   1. Ability to obtain information about the historical development and application methods of textile printing and paint techniques
2   2. Ability to apply the techniques of textile paint and printing
3   3. Ability to prepare the textile paint and printing recipes in the atelier conditions
4   4. Ability to use different techniques with the textile printing techniques at the same time
5   5. Ability to create new surfaces on the fabrics that are made of different fibers such as denim, velvet, bamboo, soy, Tencel etc. with the mechanical and chemical effects with the mechanical and chemical effects
6   6. Ability to present a work that is prepared in line with the starting point and analysed with the integrative approach

Course Contents

1 Informing about the historical development of the textile printing
2 Evaluating the paint and printing techniques all together
3 Establishing a contact between the applications of direct, discharge and resist printing techniques and chosen fabric and surface design that is wished to be produced by the students
4 Researching about the application methods of block printing and painting in different cultures
5 Researching about the application methods of Stencil and screen printing in different cultures
6 Researching about the qualities of different fabrics and choosing prinitng, paint and finishin operations that are to be applied in line with the technical characteristics of the fabric
7 Discussing the relationship between the fabric quality and coloring techniques
8 Questioning the current usages and researching alternative applications
9 Preparing a project in line with a concept or subject that is chosen
10 Doing experimental work in the atelier in the light of the techniques that are researched
11 Doing experimental work in the atelier in the light of the techniques that are researched

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

In the course of learning, main resources regarding the subject matter are recommended for the students and it is expected from the students to research in-depthly about the technique that they wish to apply. The technique or techniques that they choose are interpreted in line with a concept and starting point. Innovative solutions and different opportunities of visual effect regarding the surface design are researched by studying on the technique applied in line with the experimental point of view along with the traditional or new materials.

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

Mastery of traditional paint and printing techniques, ability to synthesise the new materials and techniques with the traditional methods, attempt to explore the possibilities of the materials used and ability to solve the problems that are encountered by the students are significant.

Assessment Criteria

The dimension of research, attendance, adjustment of the project subject with the material and techniques that are chosen and workshops/atelier applications are significant.
