Course Objective

To comprehend the principles of functional harmony, chord structures and the rules of four-part (SATB) harmony through theoretical knowledge.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Demonstrate main concepts of harmony.
2   Explain dissimilar chord structures according to their principal aspects.
3   Recognize non-harmonic tones used in works of Baroque, Classical and Romantic periods.
4   Determine the construction and scale degrees of chords that include numerous non-harmonic tones.
5   Analyse the place and importance of the smallest harmonic unit within the whole design.
6   Interpret the effects of functional harmony on the overall design of works.

EXAMS: A midterm exam will be held at the end of the semester; a student will earn 60% of his/her grade through this exam.

HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS: A student will earn 40% of his/her grade via homework assignments/papers given throughout the semester.
