Course Objective

The purpose of this course is to intruduce the students to the lieder of W.A. Mozart, Beethoven, G. Loewe, F. Schubert, Fanny Mendelssohn, Felix Mendelsson, R. Schumann, C. Schumann, F. Liszt, R. Wagner, Robert Franz, J. Brahms, H. Wolf, G. Mahler, R. Strauss, Hans Pfitzner, A. Schönberg, Joseph Marx, Alban Berg and Kurt Weill; and to teach this repertoire according to its content, style and interpretation.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   1 When they hear a German Lieder, they can recognize the piece, the composer and the period which it belongs.
2   2 Can interpret the German Lieder repertoire stylisticly.
3   3 They will be lectured about great poets such as Rückert, Heine, Goethe, Eichendorf, Möricke who wrote the lyrics of the many German Lieder.
4   4 They will learn a wide variety of songs that they can use for their performances.
5   5 This course will allow the students to focus on Lieder and concert singing in their careers.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

The students will be given a general information historically and about the composer, the period, as well as the elements of the pieces, such as the translations and its stylistic properties. Having prepared the underlying context, they will also listen to the piece and follow it on the vocal score.

Assessment Criteria

The students will be given a handout and recordings of the study pieces to prepare for the exam. In the exam, the students will listen to segments of some of the pieces that were chosen from the given recordings. They will be asked to name the piece, its composer, its poet, time period, elements of the piece (the type of voice it was written for, whether it is for orchestra or piano vocal, whether it belongs to a cyle or a separate lieder, the poet of the lyrics and as well as the special harmonical or structural properties if there are any.) Each question will be worth 10 points. Recognizing the composer and the name of the song will be 5 points, describing the elements of the piece will be 5 points.
