Course Objective

To analyze formal, tonal and harmonic aspects of Baroque, Classical and Romantic period works through theoretical knowledge.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Demonstrate main concepts of music forms and harmony.
2   Explain musical styles, music forms, chordal structures and non-harmonic tones according to their principal aspects.
3   Recognize formal and chordal designs used in Baroque, Classical and Romantic periods.
4   Analyse the place and importance of the smallest formal and chordal unit within the whole design.
5   Assess similarities and dissimilarities of various styles, forms and chordal structures.
6   Interpret the effects of formal and chordal components on the overall design of works.

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

EXAMS: Two exams (midterm and final) will be held during and at the end of the semester; a student will earn 60% of his/her grade through these exams.

HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS: A student will earn 40% of his/her grade via homework assignments/papers given throughout the semester.

Assessment Criteria

Written exams and homework assignments aim at evaluating whether or not a student has achieved theoretical and applied proficiency as described in Learning Outcomes.
