Course Objective

1. To teach basic principles and terminology of energy conversions,
2. To introduce fundamentals of thermal design of engineering systems,
3. To enhance the ability of analysis, application and communication in this field.

1   Design basic thermal engineering system
2   Analyze, apply and communicate in this field
3   Apply the first and second law to the analysis of the performance and efficiency of gas power cycles
4   Ability to choose system for any problem
5   Express the second law of thermodynamics and apply it to determine different cycle performance and efficiency limitations

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Second law of Thermodynamics. Heat engines. Refrigeration systems and heat pumps.
2 Reversible and irreversible processes. Carnot cycles
3 Carnot principles.
4 Clausius inequality. Entropy.
5 Third law of Thermodynamics. Entropy change of pure substance.
6 Temperature-Entropy (T-s) diagram.
7 Midterm Exam
8 Entropy change of ideal gasses. Reversible steady flow work. Adiabatic efficiency of some engines.
9 Power cycles with gas flow
10 Otto and Diesel cycles. Brayton cycle.
11 Vapor power cycles : Rankine cycle. Ideal reheat Rankine cycle,
12 Ideal regenerative Rankine cycle.
13 Refrigeration cycles: Refrigerators and heat pumps.
14 Vapor compression refrigeration cycles.
