Course Objective

This course mainly aims to meet the mandatory minimum requirements for seafarers for familiarization, basic safety training and instruction.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Students will be able to survive at sea. 2   Students will be competent to operate life-saving appliances. 3   Students will have knowledge of fire prevention and firefighting. 4   Students will have knowledge about safe working procedures and social responsibilities at ship 5   Students will be competent to take immediate action upon encountering an accident or medical emergency until the arrival of a person with medical first aid skills or the person in charge of medical care on board.

Week Subject Description 1 Types of Emergency Situations(collision, fire, foundering etc.), Abandoning Ship 2 Personal Life-Saving Appliances, their usage and places, Survival Crafts and Rescue 3 Survival at Sea, Emergency Radio Equipment, Helicopter Assistance 4 Evacuation and Recovery of Survival Craft and Rescue Boats Actions, Using of Survival Crafts at sea 5 Components of fire and explosion (fire triangle), Types and Sources of Ignition Fire Hazard and Flammable Materials Commonly Found on Board, Dangers of the fire and spreading of the fireskills or the person in charge of medical care on board. 6 Organization of Shipboard Fire Fighting Location of Fire Fighting Appliances and Emergency Escape Routes 7 Midterm Exam 8 Classification of Fires and Applicable Extinguishing Agents Selection of Fire Fighting Appliances and Equipment 9 Observe Safe Working Practice Human Relationships on Board Ship 10 Understand Orders and be Understood in Relation Shipboard Comply with Emergency Procedure 11 Take Precautions to Prevent Pollution of the Marine Environment Social Responsibility (Rights and obligation of crew, employment condition, drugs and alcohol) 12 Body Structure and Functions Positioning of Casualty The Unconscious Casualty 13 Bleeding Control Management of Shock 14 Burns and Scalds, and Accidents caused by Electricity Rescue and Transport of Casualty
