Pharmacology

Level of Course Unit

Third Cycle Programmes (Doctorate Degree)

Course Coordinator

ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR MUALLA AYLIN ARICI

Offered to

Pharmacology

Course Objective

To learn general aspects of drugs, to discuss pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of drugs, to discuss mechanism of drug-drug interactions

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   to define drug absorption, to classify and explain the factors which affects absorption rate of drugs, to discuss effects of food on drug absorption, to explain diffusion of drugs from membranes, to define bioavailabilty, to define entero-hepatic cycle.
2   to relate the molecular structure of drugs with physiologic fluid compartments; to define free and bound drug; to define secestration; to define redistribution; to define and to interpret volume of distribution;
3   to discuss the results of drugs metabolism; to explain phase I and phase II metabolism and the general properties of enzymes that play a role in metabolism; to interpret the role of microsomal enzymes in drug-drug interactions; to discuss hepatic clearance
4   to explain the renal elimination mechanisms of drugs; to explain general properties of drugs eliminated by renal; to know about other elimination ways and general properties of drugs eliminated by these ways; to explain the concept of total clearance and renal clearance; to interpret kinetics and elimination half life of drugs
5   to explain and interpret the factors which change the effects of drugs.
6   to describe the mechanism of effects of drugs
7   to describe and explain the mechanisms of drug-drug interaction and drug-food interaction
8   to draw graphs of the blood versus time for drugs and to explain basic pharmacokinetic parameters (Cmax, tmax, t1/2, EAA, Cl, ke); to describe drug concentration-effect relationships and to explain basic pharmacodynamic parameters (Emax, EC50, IC50)
