Course Objective

To give students the skills needed to be able to analyze the harmony and form of a musical work (including defining nonharmonic tones) both orally and in writing.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   The ability to recognize the fundamental principles of four-part chorale composition and follow the score both vertically and horizontally;
2   The ability to identify and properly mark nonharmonic tones, including passing and neighboring tones, appoggiaturas, suspensions and anticipations;
3   The ability to notate the results of harmonic and formal analysis on the score of a musical work;
4   The ability to recognize the primary characteristics of binary and ternary song forms;
5   The ability to improve his/her instrumental performance of a tonal piece of music through a deeper understanding of the harmonic technicalities involved.
