Course Objective

The course BIO 5007 in the Medical Biochemistry Department addresses the fundamental elements of cellular biochemistry. The BIO 5007 is a prerequisite for this course in which the material presented in BIO 5007 will be continued to address advanced subjects. The syllabus includes; genome structure, gene expression leading to phenotype, cellular organelles, mitochondrial function other than bioenergetics, apoptosis, autophagy, mitosis-miosis, angiogenesis, mechanism of cancer, structure-function relationship in stem cells.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Should have knowledge on genome structure and organization, translocations, DNA nucleotide sequence repair mechanisms.
2   Should have understood mRNA structure, different RNA types, and its role in the formation of cellular phenotype.
3   Should have knowledge on the synthetic role of mitochondria, its transport proteins and its role in cellular biochemistry other that its major role in bioenergetics.
4   Should have adequate knowledge on celuler cytoskeleton, mechanisms of cellular movement, the extracellular matrix and its interrelation with cells.
5   Should have understood mechanisms of cell death, mitosis, and miosis.
6   Should have knowledge on basics mechanisms and pathological processes in vascular biology
7   Should have adequate knowledge on cancer development and stem cell function.
8   Should be able to read, interpret and make a presentation of a given manuscript in the area of the course.
