Course Objective

This course deals with the approaches of prominent Turkish intellectuals, from the Tanzimat Period to the Republican Era, to the topics related to religion and society in Turkey such as Ahmet Cevdet Paşa, Ziya Gökalp, Prens Sabahattin, Sait Halim Paşa, Ahmet Rıza Bey and Mehmet Izzet. It examines periods and mentality patterns, sources of intellectual inspiration, and political and intellectual debates from different aspects through the portraits of prominent intellectuals who have focused on social and religious issues.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Understands the development of the history of Turkish Thought in the late Ottoman and early Republic period.
2   Explains deeply the intellectual movements in the Second Constitutional Monarchy Period.
3   Evaluates the different approaches of Turkish thinkers on religion and society.
4   Learns how Turkish intellectuals' views on religious life are shaped by the dynamics of Turkish socio-cultural life and influences from the West.
5   Interprets how the conceptual / theoretical frameworks of our thinkers affect and shape the Turkish socio-cultural structure and intellectual life.
