Course Objective

In this course, integrated planning and design of the historical areas from the
building scale to the spatial pattern aimed to teach. In this context, firstly spatial
analysis and documentation of selected historical area will be initiated. Then the
information related with the processes of social and economic will be collected.
Starting from the plan decision of 1/5000 scale to 1/1000, 1/500 and if necessary the
lower-and upper-scale studies will be handled depending on the selected sample.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   will be able to define historical area together with in its region (Knowledge),
2   will be able to tell historical area, social structure, ecological and historical values in historical period (Knowledge),
3   will be able to explain differences and tensions between historical area and city (Comprehension),
4   will be able to interpret for solving the problem of historical area using and the content and approach of existing planning practices (Application),
5   will be able to adapt the basic parameters of the planning approach in order to balance between development and ecological / historical values for rural / urban development (Application),
6   will be able to criticize eroded structure of urban conservation planning which oriented with Public Benefit (Analysis),
7   will be able to plan historical area according to alternative approaches (Synthesis).

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Introduction to project topic: expectations and issues to be covered through the semester. Supply of the necessary literature and sources. Supply of the necessary maps.
2 Field survey (spatial, economic and social)
3 Analysis of field survey
4 Synthesis of survey analysis
5 1st Jury Analysis + Report
6 Giving planning decisions and strategies in large scale (Decision of transportation and land use in 1/5000 scale)
7 Preparation of development plan (Distribution of function and density in 1/1000 scale)
8 Revisions to the plan by means of feed-backs (1/500 and 1/1000 scales)
9 Development of design in 1/500 scale
10 Continuation of design work in 1/500 and lower scales
11 2nd Jury Project + Report
12 Revisions to the plan by means of jury critics (1/500, 1/1000 and 1/5000 scales)
13 Formulation of final product
14 Final sketches

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

This course will be given through lectures, readings, field survey, research about
examples, preparation of research reports and maps in the form of individual or group
work, critiques of projects carried out in the form of individual or group work and
preparation of project reports.

Assessment Criteria

For measuring of the individual / group work about study area i.e. defining
(Knowledge), telling (Knowledge) will be measured by 1st Midterm Examination (Jury).
Explaining (Comprehension), interpreting (Application) and adapting (Application) will
be measured by 2nd Midterm Examination (Jury).
Criticizing (Analysis) and planning (Synthesis) will be measured by Final Examination
(Jury).
