Course Objective

The course aims to give the fundamentals of contaminated soil remediation as well as the behavior of the contaminants in the soil matrix.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Knows the general major physical, chemical, and biological properties of the soils
2   Knows the fundamental processes in the soil that define the behavior, fate and transport of contaminants
3   Can list the frequently detected soil contaminants and be aware of the environmental effects of soil contaminants
4   Can tell the major physical, chemical, and biological soil remediation/treatment techniques and knows how to combine them
5   Can define the partitioning pathways of a contaminant between the soil, water and air phases
6   Knows the importance of the status of the contaminants on the treatability of the soil, such as contamination age, solubility of the contaminant, etc.

3 Behaviors of a contaminant in soil, the factors and processes determining the contaminant transport in soil, the faith of a pollutant plume
4 In-situ and Ex-situ soil remediation, Physical soil remediation techniques
5 Chemical soil remediation
6 Bioremediation and its principals
7 Selection of term projects
8 How to response to a contaminated site, the details and requirements of an onsite investigation
9 Phase partitioning of a contaminant, the factors and the features determining the phase partitioning
10 Screening of novel soil remediation methods, comparison of recent studies
11 Standard test methods for determination of major soil properties and pollutants
12 National and international regulations on soil contamination, soil standards
13 Term project presentation

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

The fundamentals of the soil contamination and contaminant behavior in soil matrix are instructed in the first weeks of the course as well as the conventional soil remediation techniques. The partitioning of the contaminant ibetween the soil-water and soil-air interfaces are also given by the instructor and novel soil remediation techniques or modifications of the conventional methods are discussed in the class.
