Course Objective

The aim of the course is to cover initially the analytical methods for understanding the industrial development as a basis for urbanization and then to develop necessary back ground for the students to think about the bureaucratization and centralization. The process of such a study requires detailed analysis of potentials of a urban region. Process of urban planning is subject to discussions in comparison to national planning and the concept of economical growth is also needed to be over viewed. Therefore industrial development and the problem of industrial location and clustering are to be analyzed in regional context.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   will be able to define industrial revolution and its worldwide impacts (Knowledge),
2   will be able to understand the relations between industrialization and urbanization (Knowledge),
3   will be able to describe actual situation of economical development (Comprehension),
4   will be able to interpret the regional data and the industrial location (Application),
5   will be able to relate regional planning to location of manufacturing (Analysis).
6   will be able to propose a normative problem solving the existing situation (Synthesis),
7   will be able to revise the actual industrial planning system (Evaluation).

1 Brief description of the course outline.
2 Definition of the metropolitan region and metropolitan city. General problems of metropolitan cities and regions. Aspects of urbanized region. Geographical approach.
3 Theoretical background. Planning hierarchies and interrelations. A historical approach. Subject of term paper
4 Concept of trade theory, location theory, export theory.
5 Discussions on urbanization, centralization and de-centralization
6 industrial revolution, changing industrial policies
7 Economical sectors analysis and regional and interregional input-output analysis.
8 Mid-term exam.
9 Changing new approaches in industrial policies and relevant legislation,
10 Changing new approaches in industrial policies and relevant legislation,Metropolitan and regional influence on the structural appearance of urban area.
11 Flow analysis and transportation demand estimations in metropolitan areas and regions.
12 Theory of location, factors affecting production, choice in spatial organization.
13 Industrial development and the problem of relocation due to the technological change.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

This course will be given through studio practices. Students will learn topics by attending and practising the planning studio. Planning problems will be given to students in the 1st Week and they will be asked to prepare their solutions on the problems given to them.
