Course Objective

Introduction of structure and also current opportunities and restrictions of ship building and repair sector is made in this course; and the aim is to improve the ability of the student to determine various ship designs, manufacturing methods and shipyard strategies by means of economic criteria.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to reach instruments required to follow-up the developments in ship building and repair 2-sector on global and national scales
2   To be able to specify the problems of ship building and repair sector by an accurate terminology, and to utilize the historical data concerning the solution
3   To be able to establish a new building and maintenance-repair shipyard organization, and to make assignments by identifying the adequate positions
4   To be able to establish supply chain of the ship building and repair shipyard
5   To be able to define the risks concerning economic and supply chain and to develop precautions
6   To be able to follow-up the related literature both from the electronic medium and mass media
7   To be able to write down research suggestion directed at shipbuilding and maintenance-repair industry
8   To be able to report the findings in English and to make presentation

1 Introduction, introduction of course content, distribution of course notes basic concepts of ship management Distribution of research subjects
2 General outlook of world shipping sector, significant routes and marine transportation methods
3 Basic concepts of engineering economy and their adaptations to maritime shipping
4 Place of economic criteria in the ship design and an implementation
5 Optimization of the ship design in the direction of a given route and speed
6 Effect of loading/unloading equipments on the transportation
7 Establishment of supply chain on the shipyard management and its economic dimensions
8 Cost estimation and environmental factors in the stages of design, building and maintenance-repair
9 Methods of risk estimation and management, an implementation for the ship dismantling
10 General layout of new building and maintenance-repair shipyards, shipyard features and bands
11 Environmental factors and their economic dimensions
12 International and national rules aimed at new building and maintenance-repair shipyards
13 Finance models (guest speaker)
14 Presentation of research reports and open discussion

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Course shall be taught by lecturing in the classroom, and student shall be required to write a research article on a subject to be determined in the beginning of the semester. Rules of writing a research article shall be taught to the student. Confirmation of learning shall be made by means of results of mid-term exam and final exam.

Attendance: Even though attendance of the student to each course is expected, compulsory attendance is 70%. .Attendance will be taken at the beginning of the each class. Plagiarism: Plagiarism will be reported to Academic
Judiciary Board and can result in getting zero on the assignements / exams and failing course. Late assignement: All assignements are due at the beginning of the class. The extentions will not be garnted. Accommodations: Students are required to let the instructor know any special accommodation needed due to learning disabilities, medical needs, etc.
