Course Objective

The aim of this course is to associate the properties of materials with their structures based on the basic concepts of materials science and engineering, to describe the methods and techniques used to determine the properties of materials, to examine the working principles of the devices used in material characterization in relation to basic engineering and sciences, to describe the methods applied to improve the properties of materials, and to examine the effects of these methods on the structure of materials.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To examine the relationships between the structure and properties of materials
2   To define the basics of the characterization methods and techniques by giving their classifications
3   To present the working principles of the equipments used in material characterization by giving examples from engineering applications
4   To describe the methods and their mechanisms applied to improve the structural or surface properties of materials
5   To present the methods used to improve material properties by giving examples from engineering applications
