Metallurgical and Material Engineering

Course Objective

The course objective is to introduce types of corrosion which metallic and ceramic materials encounter in corrosive environments at high temperatures and to make the student become familiar with the mechanisms, experimental evaluation and the methods of control of high temperature corrosion processes so that the student can select the proper materials and processes for protection from this type of corrosion.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to define the types of corrosion processes that metallic and ceramic materials undergo at high temperatures
2   To be able to explain the thermodynamic and kinetic aspects of high temperature corrosion
3   To will be able to design, conduct and evaluate the results of high temperature corrosion experiments
4   To be able to relate corrosion to the internal structure and properties of materials and the environmental conditions
5   To be able to identify the methods of improving the high temperature corrosion resistance of materials
6   To be able to determine the proper materials and processes for protection from high temperature corrosion
