Course Objective

Air, water, and soil constitute the environmental continuum, and are vital components
for sustaining life on earth. These components are interactive and interactions among
them are complex. The course aims to introduce the concept of integrated management and
current approaches used to this end. The course contents cover the basic elements of
integrated management in a stepwise manner, starting with objectives, constraints, data
needs, information systems, management policies and plans, testing of management
scenarios, and decision making.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   to analyze components of integrated water resources management
2   to understand and combine elements of system approach to water resources
3   to synthesize management steps in an integrated manner
4   to have legal and legislative knowledge on environmental, social and economical aspects of integrated water resources management
5   to analyze and obtain sustainability indicators for a river basin system

Course Contents

1 Need for integrated basin management Description of the basin as a continuum of integrated resources. Needs for sustainable development
2 Need for integrated basin management Basic framework and scale effects. Current practices of management-physical, hydrological, social, economic, legal, institutional problems
3 Objectives of basin management Criteria for management policy - policy analysis, Multidisciplinary objectives, Statement of management policies
4 Identification of the basin system Elements of the system (water quantity and quality, land resources, etc.), Interactions between elements, social, legal, economic, institutional aspects
5 Development of an information system Data collection - design and operation of monitoring systems, Assessment of data reliability, Development of data banks
6 Development of an information system Transfer of data into information (data analyses and modeling), Use of GIS as an integrated information system
7 Delineation of alternative management plans Development of management scenarios
8 Delineation of alternative management plans Description of comprehensive benefits
9 Delineation of alternative management plans Evaluation via GIS and basin models
