Course Objective

The aim of this course is to present fundamentals of mechanical behavior of soils on a rather theoretical basis compared to soil mechanics courses at undergraduate level, presenting basic concepts and introducing more advanced topics in consolidation, settlement and shear strength.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to analyze compression and consolidation of soils.
2   To be able to apply advanced solution methods on consolidation problems.
3   To be able to estimate shear strength of soils.
4   To be able to distinguish total and effective stress analysis.
5   To be able to evaluate settlement of footings.
6   To be able to interpret, report and present solutions of engineering problems.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 CONSOLIDATION: Fundamentals of Consolidation: General concepts and theory of one-dimensional consolidation. HW-1 will be assigned.
2 Numerical solution for one dimensional consolidation. Degree of consolidation under time-dependent loading. HW-1 will be assigned.
3 One-dimensional consolidation test. Secondary consolidation.
4 Consolidation by Sand Drains. Degree of consolidation with vertical and radial drainage. HW-1 will be submitted, and HW-2 will be assigned.
5 EVALUATION OF SOIL SETTLEMENT: Immediate Settlement: Immediate settlement from theory of elasticity.
6 Immediate settlement calculation in granular soils. HW-2 will be submitted, and HW-3 will be assigned.
7 Primary Consolidation Settlement: One-dimensional consolidation settlement. Skempton-Bjerrum modification. Settlement of over-consolidated clay. Precompression. Secondary Consolidation Settlement.
8 Stress-path Method of Settlement Calculation: Definition of stress path. Calculation of settlements from stress paths. HW-3 will be submitted, and HW-4 will be assigned.
9 1st Midterm examination.
10 SHEAR STRENGTH OF SOILS: Shear Strength of Granular Soils: Direct shear and triaxial shear tests. Critical void ratio. Comments on and correlations for friction angle. HW-4 will be submitted.
11 Shear Strength of Cohesive Soils: Triaxial testing and unconfined compression test in clays. Undrained shear strength. HW-5 will be assigned.
12 Water content and shear strength. Vane shear test. Shear strength anisotropy. Use of drained and undrained shear strength parameters for foundation design.
13 Presentations.
14 2nd Midterm Examination HW-5 will be submitted.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Course topics will be presented in class. Students will prepare and present reports on the engineering analyses done individually about compression-consolidation, shear strength and settlement.
