Course Objective

The aim of this course is to provide a basis for the understanding of the engineering properties and behavior of soils and the factors controlling changes with time and to indicate how this knowledge is used in the solution of geotechnical problems. Presenting basic concepts of soil mineralogy, composition, engineering properties, fabric, electrolyte system, total and effective stresses, deposits and their geotechnical properties, conductivity, volume change, deformation and strength, time effects.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to recall engineering properties and behavior of soils.
2   To be able to describe factors controlling changes in soil behavior with time.
3   To be able to apply acquired knowledge in the solution of geotechnical problems.
4   To be able to evaluate behavior of soils under loading.
5   To be able to Interpret, report and present solutions of engineering problems.
