Course Objective

Advanced scientific techniques are examined for the diagnosis of problems of historical, artistic and architectural buildings and their restoration by using appropriate methods. Structure and material composition used in architectural buildings are discussed. The scientific and technical knowledge concerning the morphology of artifacts and its practical application to recommend the appropriate technology for restoration and also to use scientific measurement techniques and instruments is aimed.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to discuss theoretical principles about application of analytical instrumental methods used in archeology such as atomic spectroscopy, neutron activation analysis, elemental analysis, x-ray fluorescence, raman spectroscopy, thermal analysis, UV-VIS,FT-IR spectroscopies, electron microscopy, isotope analysis, radiocarbondating, luminescence dating.
2   To be able to examine the advanced scientific techniques for diagnosis of problems of historical, artistic and architectural buildings and their restoration.
3   To be able to discuss the structure and material composition used in architectural buildings.
4   To be able to explain the chemical techniques used in restoration.
5   To be able to know uses and applications of materials.
