Course Objective

The aim of the course is to introduce the principles, methods and materials used in protection and repair of materials such as wood, metal, glass, etc. which found in wrecks and submerged ancient sites

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Recognize the maritime trade in antiquity
2   Be aware of importance of mainly containers used for transportation in ancient times in historical perspective
3   Determine the maritime trade routes and cargo types used by different civilizations
4   Classify the main commercial goods transported in ancient times and production sites
5   Be able to describe the main trade centers and harbor cities
6   Be able to support the protection of underwater cultural heritage creating a management model based on the investigation and interpretation
7   Be qualified enough to perform research on international level
8   Be able to gain a different perspective in archeology using multi-disciplines such as maritime, history, economics, etc.

5 Conservation of ceramic material, repair of material, methods and materials used
6 Examples of practices for existing conservation of ceramic materials and evaluation

8 Conservation, cleaning, protection and repair of organic material such as textiles, etc.
9 Conservation, cleaning, protection and repair of bone, ivory and other organic material
10 Conservation of metal material; bronze material, structure, chemical and physical properties, cleaning-protection-repair
11 Conservation of metal material; iron material, structure, chemical and physical properties, cleaning-protection-repair

1.Lectures: The course is carried out in lecture and class discussion format. All class members are expected to attend lecture and discussion sessions.
2.Assignment: All students are given homework assignments and they present their works to the class in the last hour of lecture.
