Course Objective

This course is designed to to provide the student an introduction to properties of the light within the ocean and passive remote sensing of the ocean color from satellite. The couse will begin with the description of the basic concepts of the ocean optics and will include radiative transfer in the ocean. In-situ and satellite sensors will be reviewed.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Acquire basic knowled on the optical properties of the sea
2   able to interpret optical properties of sea water to meet the needs of radiative transfer theory as applied to optical oceanography
3   to be able to relate water constituents and the reflected light
4   able to classify water masses according to their optical properties
5   able to use satellite remote sensing to study biogeochemical processes in the ocean

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Lectures will be presented. Each student will prepare a project on the how optical oceanography can be used to study problems of the coastal ocean.
