Course Objective

In general ecology of toxic planktonic organisms (bacteria, protista and metazoa) and in detail toxic phytoplankton, their ecology, toxins, red-tide events after blooming period, their economic and social effects, the importance of discoloration of phytoplankton species after human pressure on the environment will be evaluated in the light of current information.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Students should be able to define plankton forms and describe the characteristics
2   Students should be able to identify phytoplankton and describe their toxic ones
3   Students should be able to explain how toxic phytoplankton influence major element cycles (C, N, P) in the sea
4   Students should be able to define the socio-economic effects of toxic events
5   Students should be able to define the situation in the coast of Turkey
