Course Objective

Scientific researches and evaluate of statistical data is important to know that marine living stock and the catchable size surrounding Turkish waters. For that reason needed to trained technical persons has special importance. Beside of the fisheries potential, usage of the economically fishing capacity and knowing the properties of the resources are important, as well.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Understanding that properties and potential of the marine living resources of the surrounding Turkish waters.
2   Knowing to the fisheries researches, equipment and methodology.
3   Obtaining to the basic knowledge for sustainable resources usage by evaluating the national fisheries potential.
4   Learning to the preparation of related legislation thorough out basic fisheries control and methods.
5   Experience of the latest technological system related with the fish stocks assessment studies.
6   Preparing of the strategies for national optimum fish resources usage.
7   Establishing the vision for reorganized fisheries management for sustainable national resources.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Introduction: Course outline, textbooks, reference books, homework and class assignments. General overview of marine living resources, fisheries resources.
2 Basic properties of the surrounding Turkish waters. Black Sea, Sea of Marmara, Aegean Sea, Mediterranean Sea and International waters. Marine resources properties surrounding Turkish waters.
3 Living Marine Resources Potential. Pelagic and demersal fishes, invertabrates. Fisheries resources of country, annual fisheries production, fish distribution around the Turkish waters, the most important fisheries resources
4 Aquaculture Marine aquaculture. Cage and land (pool) breeding systems, hatcheries. An overview to the aquaculture according to the environmental conditions, basic items of the optimum yield obtain.
5 Analyze of National Fisheries Capacity Purse seiner and trawl boats, gill nets, artisanal fishing equipments. Angling, sportive (amateur) fishing.

7 Ecology of Fish Populations Increase and decrease of the stocks, fish mortality and effects to the stock, stock fructifications at the plankton feeder fishes, feeding and stomach analysis. General aspects at the fish ecology and biology.
8 Fish Migrations Migrations which depends on temperature and seasons, daily migrations, spawning and feeding migrations.
9 Natural fish stock sizes and measurements. Swept area method, marking, egg production analysis, acoustic technology, stock studies
10 Fish Measurements Methods. Balık Ölçüm Metotları Gonadosomatic index (GSI) and fecundity analysis, age analysis, length-weight-age relations. Biometric studies.
11 Fish populations Dynamics. Landed fish (catch) statistics, fishing power, basic concept at population dynamics, monitoring methods for population size, total mortality, and sustainable yield.
12 Strategies for Turkish Fisheries. Short, mid and long term strategies.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

1. Lectures
Class lectures are carried out in a highly interactive format. The instructor prompts
students for response to questions posed and solicits their thoughts on issues
discussed. Lectures will focus on additional elaboration and illustration will be provided for better comprehension.
2. Class Discussions
In-class assignments and homework assignments are the basis of problems to be solved in
classroom discussions. Individual participation by students in classroom discussions
will be strongly encouraged.
