Course Objective

To model and build any manmade structures on the seabed or in the coastal area in an environmentally safe way, there are numerous factors that engineers, geologists, marine and environmental scientists must be recognized. These factors are which affecting the sediment/water interface, the sediment column on the continental shelf and slope, and the abyssal plains. Armed with this information, these specialists are able to evaluate environmental hazards. This course provides a broad survey of these factors and also discusses marine investigation, surface and core soil sampling and relevant laboratory testing technologies.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Discussion of soil mechanics, marine geology, chemistry, and oceanography
2   Geotechnical classifications, properties, and behavior of seafloor sediments
3   The design of piers, offshore platforms, bridges, and other marine constructions
4   Construction siting, surveying, and investigation of soil sampling and testing
5   Measuring with sensors seismic activity, water pressure and flow, and temperature/heat flow
6   Surveys for slope stability, seafloor movement, wave stress, and earthquake loading.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

This course will be held in the form of lectures and laboratory applications including theoretical and knowledge transfer. Laboratory applications will be performed on sediment samples at Geotechnical laboratory of Institute of Marine Sciences and Technology.

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

1. Exams
Two tests will be carried out during the period.
Midterm (40%)
Final exam (60%)
Examination, obtaining information about the methods used in Marine Geotechnology and will measure the ability to apply the method. Each exam will include the class material, and will include the assigned applications.
2. Homework and Participation
Students working on the problem and understand them, it is essential for students to complete the course. Prepare presentations on any subject related to the content of the course the students with the realization of debate and discussion in the classroom of students prepared presentations, class participation and interpretation capabilities will be developed.

Assessment Criteria

1. The exam will take place in one of the main topics of each chapter. You will be asked one or more questions for each topic. The rating evaluation of exam questions will be carried out according to the point system determined by instructor.
2. Students to be derived from participation in points (i) attendance is condition, (ii) the student's quality of response to questions asked by the instructor during class, and (iii) will depend on the contribution to the students to create a positive learning environment.
3. The degree that a good turnout for the border between the two grades will carry your stage to the next level.
4. Subject to be clearly understood, the accuracy of the data evaluation will be evaluated on presentation prepared about the course content.
