Course Objective


The objective of this course is to give knowledge about the performance properties of nonwoven textiles for different end-use application areas and to teach the common test and evaluation methods for nonwoven textiles.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To classify the performance characteristics of nonwovens.
2   Having the ability to compare the performance properties of nonwovens with other textile materials.
3   Selection of raw material for the production of non-woven and to evaluate its properties.
4   To have sufficient theoretical knowledge about common test methods for nonwovens.
5   Having the ability to analyze, evaluate and interpret of the factors affecting performance properties of nonwoven.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 General information on non-woven textiles, classification according to use of field and information concerning the expected performance characteristics
2 Selection of raw materials for nonwovens, defining the basic structural characteristics and measurement (fiber fineness and length, bending, moisture retention, tensile and elongation properties)
3 Basic structural characteristics and evaluation methods in the non-woven (thickness, density, fiber orientation, porosity)
4 Basic structural characteristics and evaluation methods of nonwovens (continued)
5 Mechanical properties of nonwovens (tensile, tear, abrasion, bending, to compress, drape)
6 Mechanical properties of nonwovens (continued)
7 Permeability properties of nonwovens (air, water vapor permeability)
8 Liquid absorption and transfer properties of nonwovens (drop test, liquid absorption time, liquid absorption capacity, capillary wetting properties)
9 Liquid absorption and transfer properties of nonwovens (continued)
10 Acoustical and thermal insulation of nonwovens
11 Midterm
12 Optical (opacity and brightness) properties
13 Electrostatic properties of nonwovens

In this course, besides the presentations of lecturer, lessons are taught interactively in order to give the abilities to evaluate and to analyze the performance properties of nonwovens. Students are encouraged to share knowledge and discuss about the course topics. Attendance to the course is mandatory.
