Course Objective

This course aims to teach the fine structure properties of natural and synthetic fibers. To understand the theoretical models about fiber fine structure. To learn the analysis techniques which are used for the determination of physical, chemical and morphological properties of the fibers.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to classify the textile fibers
2   To define and describe the fiber structure and fiber properties
3   To be able to compare the fiber fine structure models taking into account the differences
4   To be able to analyze the crystallization and the orientation definitions
5   To be able to discuss the analysis techniques which are used for the determination of fiber fine structure

Course Contents

1 Definition, classification and general properties of textile fibers
2 Monomers and polymers, types of polymerization, properties of polymers used for textile fibers
3 Theoretical models for fiber fine structure: Fringed micelle theory
4 Theoretical models for fiber fine structure: Fringed fibril theory, folded chain theory
5 Fiber orientation
6 Fiber crystallization and crystal types
7 Morphological properties of fibers
8 Anisotropic structures of fibers. Birefringence, dielectric and dichroism in fibers
9 Analysis techniques to determine the fiber fine structure (X-ray spectroscopy, polarize microscopy etc.)
10 Analysis techniques to determine the fiber fine structure (Infrared spectroscopy, FTIR, fluorescence microscopy)
11 Comparison of X-ray diagrams and patterns of textile fibers
12 Midterm exam
13 Presentations: Theoretical models
14 Presentations: Experimental methods

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

In this course, the capability and the knowledge of students will be assessed by the midterm exam. The homework success will determine the ability of accessing the information and presenting. Final examination will measure the information learnt in the course.
