Course Objective

To have abilitty to understand the importance of strata control and design an underground excavation.

3   Able to understand the stresses around underground openings
4   Able to understand the underground support systems and their properties
5   Able to design of support sytems for underground openings

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Basic terms, the importance of strata control in mining
2 Intact rock and rock mass properties and behaviour
3 Failure criterions in underground excavation
4 Stress distrubiton around the underground openings and determination of (loads acting on support) support loads
5 Types of underground excavations and stability problems (pillar, roof, flour failure, convergence, etc)
6 Fundamental principles of support design
7 Types and properties of support elements used in underground (drifts, face and shaft, rock bolts, shotcrete, stell supports)
8 Midterm
9 Strata control for underground mineral excavations (Longwall supports, pillar loads and strength, and room and pillar design)
10 Support design for shafts and tunnels
11 Backfill types and properties and design
12 Support design based on rock mass classification systems
13 Numerical methods in support design
14 Numerical methods in support design
