Course Objective

This course presents an overview of the process for the design and management of open pit mine slopes. describe the information required to support a slope design and the methods of data collection. Application of the slope stability evaluation techniques and procedures (Empirical analyses, Kinematic analyses, Limit equilibrium analyses, Numerical analyses), Monitoring methods for pit slopes and stabilization methods will be discussed.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   able to evaluate factors controlling instability, support and reinforcement of excavated and filled slopes
2   able to evaluate principles associated with the concept of the factor of safety of a slope
3   able to evaluate the relationship between critical slope height and critical slope angle
4   able to apply the slope stability evaluation techniques and procedures
