Course Objective

The course aims to be learn of the main techniques of the Advanced Seismology as both the theoretical and practical.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Introduction: seismic waves, departure from isotropy-perfect elasticity-homogeneity, stratified models. Homework-1: The fundamental concepts and descriptions of seismology-I.
2 Ray Theory: ray method, electrodynamics equation in homogeneous media, rays, ray fields. Homework-2: The fundamental concepts and descriptions of seismology-II.
3 Reflection and Transmission at an Interface: wave equation in seismology, seismic body waves, reflection and refraction at a free surface, phase shift, inhomogeneous waves, interface waves. Homework-3: The ray responses to the miscellaneous interfaces.
4 Inversion: classical travel time inversion, inversion for structures that include LVL. Homework-4: The calculations of Eikonal, Function J, and Caustic. Homework-5: The calculation of the radius of curvature for different rays.
5 Inversion: an inversion method in seismic prospecting. Homework-6: The calculation of the wave potentials.
6 Ray Tracing: different ray tracing procedures, cell ray tracing, dynamic ray tracing. Homework-7: The calculation of reflection and transmission potentials, and their coefficients.
7 Midterm exam-1
8 Ray Tracing: different ray tracing procedures, cell ray tracing, dynamic ray tracing. Homework-8: The estimation of underground parameters using conventional inversion.
9 Synthetic Seismograms: ray theoretical method, reflectivity method, standard ray method. Homework-9: The calculation of the ray trajectories.
10 Synthetic Seismograms: paraxial ray method, Gaussian beam approach, AMM, WKBJ and Maslov seismograms.
11 Synthetic Seismograms: synthetic seismogram in seismic prospecting. Homework-10: A synthetic seismogram calculation.
12 Midterm exam-2
13 Surface Waves: surface waves, Love waves, dispersed Rayleigh/surface waves. Homework-11: The calculation of dispersion curves.
14 Free Oscillation of the Earth: fundamental modes and higher modes.
