Course Objective

The aims and objectives of the proposed course are to give a special emphasis on hydrology of floods, estimating flood design events and their use in the design and economic evaluation of the alternative flood mitigation projects.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To describe the deterministic and probabilistic approaches used for flood mitigation
2   To describe the flood control methods
3   To establish the relationship between available data and methods
4   To use the flood mitigation, flood routing and flood control methods
5   To evaluate the economic aspects of flood control
6   To determine the constrains and application areas of methods
7   to decide on the appropriate approach considering purposes, available data and economic aspects

3 Statistical Analysis of Floods: Floods and rain storms as extreme annual hydrologic events, A short review of probability distribution models
4 Risk concept and risk-based design of control structures
5 Single-station analysis of peak flows and extreme storms
6 Regional Analysis
7 Physical Hydrologic Models for Estimating Floods
8 Linear hydrologic systems and response function, Unithgraph derivation
9 Synthetic unithgraph procedures
10 Conceptual models, Estimating design floods via physical models
11 Flood Routing: Lumped system routing, Runge-Kutta method, Level pool routing, Hydrologic river routing, Linear reservoir model
12 Economic Aspects of Flood Control: Framework for economic assessment, Alternative structural and non-structural measures, Economic evaluation and multicriterion of alternative mitigation actions
