Course Objective

With a well-rounded perspective examining the Modernization phenomenon, Early Republican Architecture in which Modernization was applied by the state and public space was transformed completely, in this context deciphering the style of realizing the Modernization tendency of the pioneer public space models improved in the Republican Period

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Define Modernization phenomenon, Early Republican Architecture which realized Modernization project and pioneer public space models revealed by this architecture in the context of their main characteristics
2   Associate the main approaches related to Modernization phenomenon with the Early Republican Architecture and especially with the public space models
3   Use the data obtained, on the concrete examples selected in the context of the public space models (urban, rural or architectural models)
4   With the presentations, discuss the potential of the selected and explored examples in transferring the main approaches related to the Modernization project of the Republic and the public space models examined
5   Develop the researches in the light of discussions

5 The concept of public space and Modernization, the main transformations lived in the public spaces of Republican Turkey
6 Determining research subjects related to the public space models of the Republic and urban models, Modernist urban planning, new urban systems
7 Urban models, publicness organized by transportation, urban parks
8 Village models, village development, village plannings
9 Architectural models, Administrative buildings- New Government Offices, Town Halls, Cultural buildings- Community Centers, Educational buildings- Village Institutations

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

1.Theoretical/Visual Lectures:
In the course, theoretical/visual lectures related with the subjects will be realized accompanied by the student discussions.
2. Student Presentations:
In the second half of the term, the researches prepared by the students in the context of pioneer public space models will be presented as the seminars and discussed in class medium. The assignments of the presented studies will be gathered at the end of the term.
3. Technical Trips:
If they want, students will be able to realize the researches based on site studies, on this extent they will be able to make technical trips to some well-qualified public spaces of the Early Republican Period in urban, rural or architectural scale
