Course Objective

The objective of the course is built on main concepts students should know, and terminological information that forms the play and about the play structure (like theme, subtheme, personification, plot structure, action, conflict, circumstance, climax, rising action, motif, sybol, crysis etc.). Moreover dramaturgy, dramaturgist and his/her fields of study are underlined, focused.

4   To acknowledge main concepts of a dramatic design such as theme, motive, action plan, plot structure, dramatic incident, conflict, circumstance, complication, crysis, resolution, final, time, place, dialogue structure, etc

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 What is dramaturgy = the play Kunstwissenschaft (art-science) What are the duties of a dramaturg What s the place of the dramaturg in Turkish Theater
2 What are the characteristics of a play What is (introduction body conclusion) A play depending on chain of events with a linear structure is introduced.
3 Action and action trend that are the sub-concepts of the chain of events, are brought into focus. Inner and outer action, action formed by the characters and the action develops through the line structure are all mentioned.
4 The following will be held with the examples: theme concept, which is the thought ruling throughout the play, and the dramatic events that are vital to introduce it, the event that starts the action. Discussion is to be made about what are the sub-themes.
5 The situation and the conflict are enrolled; discussed through examples. Static moments, situations that a play is structured, photographic moments of a play, are determined
6 Solution and final examples are held. Flash back. Examples from the plays with an open ending, or the judgements is left to the audience are given
7 The importance of the motive in the plays, and usage of symbols known concepts are put emphasis on.
8 Mid-term Exam
9 The concept of place is held. Author s descriptions of atmosphere and place given in the beginning of the play are discussed.
10 The emphasis is on concept of time. Planning the time, linear concept of time, narration of different times, usage of movements in time, and the time and place undefined are all exemplified through plays.
11 The interlocution plan (dialog structure ) is held
12 Characterisation is held. Stereo types, characters are discussed through examples.
13 Examples of complete character and atmosphere plays are held
14 Evaluation is applied on a whole text.
15 Final Exam
