Course Objective

The aim of this course is to provide students to learn and practice the basic principles of radiation protection to minimize or prevent the harmful effects of radiation that produced by the radiotherapy devices used for diagnostic and therapeutic on patient, staff and the community.

1   To know effects of radiation on biological systems according to its structure and energy.
2   To define basic radiation units.
3   To know the basic radiation protection.
4   To know legal rules about radiation safety.
5   To gain the ability for the use of radiation detection systems.
6   To take task for the emergency conditions.

1 Introduction Structure of the radiotherapy department. Designs of the radiotherapy departments. Designs of the rooms where ionise radiation used.
2 General concepts What is Radiation Types of Radiation. The basic principles of radiation protection.
3 Radiation dose and units
4 The Biological Effects of Radiation The outer irradiation. The inner irradiation. Medical irradiation. The vocational irradiation. The public irradiation. The risk analysis.
5 Radiation shielding Emergency plans The implementation of emergency plans
6 Important Principles of radiobiology
7 Molecular and cellular radiobiology
8 Harmful Effects of Radiation Early effects of radiation Late effects of radiation The Epidemiological studies
9 Radiation Protection of worker by himself Personel protactive precautions for radiation worker Dose limits and protocols
10 Radiation protection of patients and patient relatives Radiation safety of patients.
11 Medical irradiations.
