Course Objective

Evaluating the major developments of Turkish architecture in the context of the Modernization project and the political, social, cultural structure of the country

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Describe the major developments of Turkish Architecture in the period extending from the beginning of the Republic untill1970's, 1980's.
2   Associate these developments with the Modernization project and the political, social, cultural structure of the country
3   Use the data gained, in the researches and presentations (verbal, written, visual, digital, etc.) developed on the base of the selected architects, buildings or other productions of Republican Architecture
4   Develop the researches and presentations in the light of the discussions and examinations

1 Meeting, giving general information of the course content
2 Presenting the general overview of the Modernization Project from Ottoman State to the Republic
3 Discussing the First National Architectural Movement
4 Discussing the Republican Architecture in the context of Modernization Project and political, social, cultural structure of the period (Early Period-1923-1938)
5 Continuation of discussing the Early Period
6 Discussion of the selected examples from the 1st National Approach and Early Period through the research-based digital presentations of the students
7 Discussion of the selected examples from the 1st National Approach and Early Period through the research-based digital presentations of the students
8 Second National Architectural Movement
9 Discussing the Republican Architecture in the context of Modernization Project and political, social, cultural structure of the period (Late Period- 1950-1980)
10 Discussion of the selected examples from the 2nd National Approach and Late Period through the research-based digital presentations of the students
11 Submission of first assignment; presentation and discussion of student works on a second sample chosen from among the architecture of the Republic in different representation environments (verbal, written, visual, digital, etc.)
12 Student presentations for the second sample

14 Submission of the second assignment

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

In the course, theoretical/visual/digital lectures related with the subjects will be realized accompanied by the student discussions.
The researches related the subjects selected by the students will be presented and discussed in different expressions (verbal, written, visual, digital, etc.).

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

35% of the grade is first assignment/presentation to replace mid-term exam, 15% is second assignment/presentation, 50% is final assignment which replace final exam. Also make-up assignment which replace make-up exam is 50% of the grade.

Second Assignment/Presentation: 15% (LO1, LO2, LO3)
