Course Objective

To sustain the students to have information about approaches and methods of ecological design.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to evaluate general ecological design principles both in urban and architectural scales.
2   To be able to construct relations among ecological design approaches and passive and active energy efficient methods
3   To be able to research and present current developments and applications about ecological architecture

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 General explanations, introducing the content and the process, introduction to ecological architecture
2 The concepts and definitions of social, cultural, economical and environmental sustainability, sustainable and ecological architecture. General principles of ecological design and life cycle design.
3 Sustainable planning, mixed use development, sustainable transportation, eco-cities, alternative sustainable living models, Permaculture, Slow Food, and Slow City
4 Active and passive methods used in ecological design; the principles of natural lighting, natural ventilating and passive heating systems. Active energy systems which produce energy from alternative sources, their integration to architectural design and their effects on identities and aesthetics of buildings.
5 Green buildings and roofs, their applications, general design principles and evaluation systems.
6 Re-use, flexible use and re-cycling in architecture. Their principles and applications.
7 Reading ecological design approaches through the samples of native and contemporary architecture.

Research: Students will be expected to present their research by different medias (text, research paper, powerpoint presentations, posters, videos etc.)
