ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR ESRA DOKUMACI ALKAN

Offered to

Metallurgical and Materials Engineering

Course Objective

The objective of this course is to discuss the general characteristics of iron and steels, cast irons, aluminium, copper, zinc, magnesium, titanium, nickel and cobalt alloys, refractory, reactive and precious metals, their classifications, engineering applications, critical requirements for these applications, the structure-process and property relations. The students are expected to select the right materials for various applications after attending the lectures.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   to classify the ferrous and nonferrous metals and alloys.
2   to compare the properties of metallic materials within their own classes as well as with metals and alloys of other classes.
3   to identify potential applications and the properties required for these applications.
4   to evaluate the strengthening mechanisms in metallic materials and the interaction between different mechanisms and their effect on other properties.
5   to explain structure, prosess and property relations in nonferrous metals and alloys
6   to select the proper alloy for engineering design and applications
