Course Objective

This course is expected to help the student to understand the fundamental properties and application areas of chemical fibers. To develop the students knowledges about textile raw materials.

1   Ability to define chemical fibers.
2   Ability to classify chemical fibers.
3   Ability to explain the production processes of chemical fibers.
4   Ability to describe and discuss the properties of chemical fibers.
5   Ability to classify the application areas of chemical fibers.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Definition of chemical, regenerated and synthetic fibers.Classification of chemical fibers. Other terms about fibers. Statistics of chemical fibers.
2 Principles, apparatus (extruder, nozzles) and methods (melt, dry and wet) of fiber spinning.
3 Other fiber spinning methods. Take-up units and drawing. Cutting and Crimping of fibers. Melt spinning fiber lab. visit.
4 History of regenerated cellulose fibers. Production, properties and applications of viscose fibers.
5 Production methods, properties and applications of cellulose acetate fibers. Defination and production of modal fiber. Properties of polynosic and HWM fibers.
6 Production methods, properties and application areas of Lyocell fibers
7 Production, properties and application of regenerated protein fibers.
8 1st Midterm Exam.
9 Classification of polyamides. Production methods, properties and applications of polyamide 6.6 (Nylon) fiber.
10 Production, properties and applications of polyamide 6 (Perlon). Difference of PA6 and PA66. Modified and aromatic polyamides.
11 2nd Midterm Exam
12 Polyester fibers. Production methods, properties and applications of polyethyleneteraphthalate. Modified and aromatic polyesters.
13 Polyvinyl derivate fibers. Production methods, properties and applications of Poly-acrylic fibers. Modified acrylic fibers.
14 Production, properties and applications of polyolefin (polyethylene and polypropylene) and polyurethane (spandex, lycra) fibers
