Course Objective

Classification and definition of textile fibers. Production methods, structures, properties and applications of natural fibers.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Classification of textile fibers. Fiber statistics. Definition of natural and man-made fibers. Definition of polymeric materials and polymerization.
2 Basic terms and definitions about fibers. Classification of natural fibers. Basic properties of natural fibers.
3 Vegetable fibers. Cotton varieties and their fiber properties, harvested in theTurkey and World. Classification of cotton. Cotton statistics.
4 Properties and differences of mature and immature cotton. Anatomical structure of mature cotton.
5 Cotton Harvesting. Ginning and baling of cotton. Harvesting and Ginning Machines. Bale Control Systems.
6 Contamination in Cotton. Classification and Standardization of Cotton. Cotton markets and application areas.
7 Visiting a cotton field and ginning mill or a seminar on cotton trade and exchange.
8 Midterm I Exam.
9 Definition of bast fibers. Properties of flax plant. Flax harvesting and fiber production. Flax fiber statistics. Properties and classification of flax fibers. Application areas of flax.
10 Production methods, properties and application areas of hemp, ramie, jute, leaf (sisal etc.) and fruit (coconut) fibers. Other vegetable fibers and recent developments in vegetable fibers.
11 Classification of animal fibers. Wool statistics and properties. Basic terms and definitions about wool fibers.
12 Structure of wool (Cuticle, cortex and medula layers). Physical and chemical properties of wool. Classification of wool fibers. Wool markets and application areas.
13 Midterm II Exam
14 History, physical and chemical properties and application areas of mohair and silk fibers. Other animal fibers and recent developments in animal fibers.
