Course Objective

1) To give information about the factors affecting fabric properties
2) To gain the ability to select and apply the appropriate test method for determining and evaluating fabric properties
3) To ensure the necessary information for statistical evaluation and interpretation of test results
4) To provide information about the use of standards on test methods



Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Information about the structural, dimensional and mechanical properties of fabrics
2   Information about the conductivity and permeability properties and sensory properties of fabrics
3   Knowledge and ability to select tests suitable for fabric type and usage area
4   Ability to recognize fabric testing devices and tests
5   Knowledge and ability to evaluate and interpret test results statistically

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Relationships between fibre, yarn and fabric properties. Classification of fabric properties: physical properties, chemical properties, sensory properties.Laboratory work:Examination of different fabric samples produced by different techonolgies. Laboratory work:Visual examination of fabric samples produced with different production techniques and for different purposes
2 Sampling for fabric tests: preliminary preparations and sampling methods Information on dimensional and structural properties of fabrics and test methods Laboratory work: Determination of production method and direction in selected fabric samples, measurement of mass per unit area and fabric setting
3 Information and test methods on dimensional and structural properties of fabrics, dimesnsional cahnge in fabrics. Practical work: Yarn count and twist tests on yarns extracted from woven and knitted fabrics. Dimensional change test on woven fabric samples.
4 Fabric mechanical properties and measurement methods: Tensile strength and elongation, tear strength Practical work:Tensile strength and tear strength tests on woven fabric samples
5 Abrasion resistance and bursting strength in fabric Practical work: Recognition of abrasion resistance tester and ball bursting apparatus, abrasion resistance tests on woven and knitted fabric samples, ball bursting strength test on knitted fabric samples
6 Pilling in Fabrics: Formation mechanism, affecting factors, precautions to reduce pilling tendency, test and evaluation methods Practical work:Pilling test on different fabric samples and evaluation of test results
7 Seam strength and seam slippage: influencing factors, effects on clothing, precautions to prevent seam slippage, test methods Practical work: Sample preparation and testing for seam strength and seam shear tests
8 Midterm
9 Drape: Definition of fabric draping, affecting factors and current test methods Practical work:: Drape tests and determination of drape coefficient on various fabric samples
10 Fabric crease. affceting factors and measurement
11 Laboratory / practical work exam
12 Conductivity and permeability in fabrics: Air permeability, Water and water vapor permeability Practical work: recognition of air permeability tester and performing air
13 Sensory Properties in Fabrics Fabric handle: definition and general information, various approaches and methods for determining fabric handle Practical work:: Subjective handle test
14 Fabric Faults: Faults occurring during fabric production, their causes and classification Fabric fault control methods Practical work Examination of images regarding fabric defects
