Course Objective

The objective of the course is to provide needed technical knowledge for selecting the appropriate pump for the system by explaining to classify the hydraulic machinery, pump characteristics, serial and paralel connections of pumps, working without cavitation to students.

1   Describe the basic principles of the turbines and pumps.
2   Define the basic working principles of the turbines and pumps.
3   Interpret the pumps efficiency curves.
4   Calculate the system characteristics.
5   Sellect appropriate pump for the system.

1 Introduction to hydraulic machines
2 Hydraulic power plants and classification of turbines
3 Classification of pumps
4 Pumps characteristic curves and pump selection criteria
5 Centrifugal pumps and impeller types
6 Losses in pipelines, system characteristics and selecting the appropriate pumps for the systems
7 Serial and parallel connection of pumps
8 1st midterm
9 The pumps that feed more than one reservoir
10 Hydraulic Similarity, the similarity concept on pumps and turbines
11 The use of pumps at different number of revolutions
12 Cavitations, net positive suction height
13 Working without cavity in pumps and turbines
14 2nd midterm

Homeworks given during the Online/Remote Education will be evaluated as midterms.

Assessment Criteria

1st, 2nd and 3rd learning outcomes will be assessed by the 1st midterm exam 4th and 5th learning outcomes will be assessed by the 2nd midterm exam. All the learning outcomes will be assessed by the final exam.
