Course Objective

By the conclusion of the course, students understand more specifically how to identify and classify ore deposits and collaborate with geologists during either in open pit or in underground operations.


Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Collaborate with geologists during either in open pit or in underground operations
2   Categorize the ore deposits according to different geological and geochemical criters
3   Define basicly the mineralogical features between different types of ore deposits.
4   Assess the geological controls in ore deposit environment
5   Identify the ore minerals in deposit

1 Classification of ore deposits, factors that determinate the feasibility of ore deposits
2 Orthomagmatic Deposits related to Mafic-Ultramafic Intrusions
3 Ore deposits related to felsic to intermediate rocks; I and S type magmas, depth of emplacement, water content, ore content
4 Greisen systems, greisenisation processes, greisens related mineral deposits
5 Skarn Deposits; isochemical contact metamorphism, prograde-metasomatism and replacement, retrograde meteoric fluid influx and main metal precipitation
6 Porphyry Systems, tectonic settings, hydrothermal alteration and mineralisation, models for the formation of porphyry type Cu, Mo and W deposits
7 Epithermal deposits related to subaerial volcanism; classification, transport and deposition of precious metals, boiling, metal zoning
8 Midterm Exam
9 Volcanogenic massive sulfide ore deposits, classification, tectonic settings, alteration and mineralisation
10 Ore deposits formed by oxidation and supergene enrichment
11 Lateritization and Lateritic Fe-Mn and Al Deposits
12 Sedimentary ore deposits; Ore deposits of lead, zinc, copper and uranium in continental or marine sediments; chemical-sedimentary Fe-Mn deposits.
