Course Objective

The aim of this course to apply the ability and experiences which gained in the first three years in description the economic geology problems, design and modellisation

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To know the principles and methods of design
2   To be able to synthesis geological litterature and geological problems
3   to be able to use geological backround in geological problems
4   to be able to describe the economic geology problems
5   to be able to design some models to analyze the economic geology problems
6   to be able to improve alternative solutions for the described geological problems
7   to be able to plan the solution of the problem by setting up a budget, equipment and related staff
8   to be able to present the results of a design project

Course Contents

1 Exploration for coal deposits: basic terms and principles
2 Environments of coal formation, anaytical methods for coal, analytical techniques, sampling and laboratory studies
3 Basic terms and principles in evaluation of rezerve and coal parameters such as moisture-ash-lower calorific value by geostatistic methods
4 Database construction for computer aided design (CAD) programs for modelling of deposits and data entry
5 Creating a solid model of a deposit and reserve estimation using CAD programs
6 Block modelling and evaluation of coal parameters such as moisture-ash-lower calorific value using CAD programs
7 Midterm exam
8 Cement and cement types, cement raw materials; Limestone formations and standards used in cement production
9 Clay formations
10 Characteristics of gypsium used in cement production
11 Additives used in cement production (trass)
12 Aggregate, concrete and concrete tests
13 Production of raw material in the cement factories, cement chemistry
14 Midterm exam

Course Policies and Rules

-First 7 weeks of the course is related with a scenario including a problem on exploration and evaluation of coal deposits.
-A problem on cement and cement raw materials is handled during the second 7 week period.
-The class i divided into groups of 8-10 students
-Every study group is supervised by a faculty member. Supervisors may contribute as instructors when necessary.
-Group work is made interactively.
