Course Objective

This is a specialized degree in economic geology designed to update the knowledge and skills required by geoscientists for the exploration and exploitation of polymetallic ore deposits.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Following the completion of this course, students will; have a broad, integrated knowledge of polymetallic ore deposits.
2   use the modern methods of geology in understanding of polymetallic mineralisation
3   define lithological, tectonic, mineralogical and geochemical characteristics between different types of polymetallic ore deposits
4   recognise the structural and textural features in the field
5   categorize the polymetallic ore deposits according to different geological and geochemical criters

1 Characteristics of ore bearing hydrothermal fluids; pH, redoks state, salinity and temperatures
2 Source of ore-bearing hydrothermal fluids: Stable isotopes
3 Hydrothermal alteration and zonation
4 Plutonic rocks: S, I ve A type granitoids and their characteristic features
5 I type plutonic rocks and associated polymetallic deposits (including skarns)
6 S and A type plutonic rocks and associated polymetallic deposits (including skarns)
7 Epithermal polymetallic deposits associated with subaerial volcanism (Au-Ag deposits)
8 Midterm exam
9 Epithermal polymetallic deposits associated with subaerial volcanism (Cu, Pb, Zn, Sb, Hg deposits)
10 Epithermal polymetallic deposits associated with subaerial volcanism (Au-Ag dominated)
11 VMS deposits: Classification and general features, Kuroko and Cyprus type deposits
12 Kuroko and Cyprus type deposits

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Presentations: Interactive presentations will be given.
Laboratory: Students will observe ore textures and structures either in hand samples or under microscope.
Field study: One of known ore deposits of Aegean Region will be visited.
