Course Objective

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) use has become increasingly valuable in many fields of engineering from transportation engineering through water resources management since they are very suitable to
store, manage, and analyze spatial data. Nowadays all engineering students must learn GIS because they are necessary to help engineers to solve problems related to planning, design and management of
major engineering projects. The main objective of the course is to introduce and teach the fundamentals of the GIS to engineering students.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Ability to identify the distinction between spatial and non-spatial data
2   Ability to compare coordinate systems and map projections
3   Ability to generate GIS by organizing data in different format
4   Ability to query spatial and non-spatial data via GIS
5   Ability to generate thematic maps and data visualization
