Course Objective

The main objective of the course is to provide information related to the detailed design and construction applications of motorways by using sample projects.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To classify the geometric characteristics which are needed on motorways.
2   To determine the design of bridge and viaduct, prestressed beams.
3   To anayze the data related to the infrastructure construction of motorways.
4   To illustrate the steps for the construction of motorways.
5   To introduce a example of motorway Project.

1 Introduction, the necessity for building a motorway, the geometric characteristics of motorway
2 Earthworks, explosives in earth work operations, splitting and embankments, excavation operations, grading operations
3 Pavement, flexible pavements, the properties of subgrade, base and subbase courses, HMA, pavement design, AASHTO design
4 The design of bridge and viaduct, prestressed beams
5 Drainage, the principles of soil drainage, subsurface drainage, surface drainage, ditches
6 The improvement of consolidated soils, consolidation calculation methods, sand drainage and The stabilization of side slopes, analysis related to stability, anchorage
7 MIDTERM EXAM
8 The application of dwidag, retaining walls
9 New techniques in retaining wall design, their calculation methods
10 Geomembranes and geosynthetics, production methods, properties and utility in pavement construction
11 Tunnels construction methods, rock classification
12 Production of prestressed precast beams, application criteria
13 Landscape and environmental regulation on motorways, general evaluation of the course
14 Homework submission and presentations and general discussions
