Course Objective

In this course, learning of experiments performed at soil mechanics laboratory in order to determine index and engineering properties of soils is aimed. Equipment and procedures, evaluation techniques, geotechnical parameters obtained from the tests, and significance of the geotechnical parameters in Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering are investigated in detail. Theoretical lessons are supported by solved problems about evaluation of the test results and calculation of the geotechnical parameters.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to recognize the fundamental concepts and parameters of Geotechnical Engineering in accordance with the technical terminology in English.
2   To be able to recognize laboratory experiments in order to classify soils and determine index properties.
3   To be able to recognize the laboratory tests to determine the engineering properties of soils.
4   To be able to decide laboratory test method within the framework of international / national experimental standards.
5   To be able to determine the geotechnical parameter obtained from soil mechanics laboratory experiment.
6   To be able to interpret laboratory experiment findings within the framework of geotechnical engineering principles.

5 Consistency Limits: Liquid Limit, Plastic Limit, and Shrinkage Limit
6 Moisture-Density Relationships: Standard Proctor and Modified Proctor Compaction Tests
7 Permeability Tests: Constant-head and Falling-head Permeability Test Methods, Flexible Wall Method
8 Oedometer (Consolidation) Test
9 Mid-term Exam
10 Shear Strength: Direct Shear Test: UU and CD types
11 Triaxial Compression Test: UU and CD types
12 Triaxial Compression Test: CU type with Pore Water Pressure Measurement

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Theoretical lessons accompanied by video camera presentations are supported by solved problems. Texts about laboratory tests are given to students before the theoretical lesson. Technical terminology is given in English.
